Rhona Bitner explores the parallel between theater and photography – in both one enters a black box and an image appears. Her work is a visual investigation into the experience of performance-theater-spectacle via the static surface of a photograph. Each aspect of this experience is rigorously observed, studied and inventoried. Individual projects take years to complete. She began with the performer in the spotlight (CIRCUS) continued to the spotlight itself, the curtain and proscenium (STAGE) and has recently completed a monumental series imaging the history of American music (LISTEN). Her plan is to examine the craft of the actor in the coming years. A methodical visual encyclopedia on the idea
of performance is carefully being constructed.
